Jam Cakes

Poetry by Lo Riddell

Here comes nature’s peace
offering: pale landscapes

with feather-brush forests
licking the first snowflakes

straight from the sky.
Invisible sun shines through

shadow-bellied clouds, turning
blue skies white with promise

of more snow. My grandmother
alchemizes the last of her summer

blackberries into cakes that fit
kindly in my open hands.

Dusk comes early once again,
creeping in through kitchen windows

to steal a piece of fresh-baked bread
from the stovetop. The holly berries

light up the roadside like string lights
for families of deer trotting by.

At last, December takes her stage
and exhales the passing year.

Pilgrim

Poetry by Rob Lowe

I like clocks, and books, and music,
Things which structure the way forward,
Are signposts and dwelling places.

Map-reading living is my hobby;
But exploring the nature of being
Requires a compass of faith.

I am waterproofed with hope,
My thoughts are warm but breathable;
I am well-equipped for the journey.

And when at last the sun goes down
After a walk through mountain terrain,
I pitch a tent of morality.

I have no home, nor family,
My friends are birds and beasts and trees;
They talk to me nightly.

I saw a harvest once, of people,
Crowded on a plain below;
And in the midst there was a steeple

And what tolled from its Sunday bell?
There is no lasting peace until
Religion consists of poetry.

Rob Lowe has written privately for many years, but only lately started submitting pieces for publication. Typical work can be found in recent issues of Lucent Dreaming, Libretto, Seventh Quarry, Aromatica Poetica, and some anthologies. He lives in Milton Keynes in the U.K.

Heartworm

Poetry by Kat Stubing

Butterflies prancing in air
Pulling a sleigh of light

I can’t help but wonder
Where you went last night

While the fireflies reigned
Over blades of wily grass

Periwinkle skies rolling in
As the thunder clouds passed

Did the twigs pop like corn
Under your bare calloused feet

As the owls watched you run
To the secrets that you keep

Oh, tiny wings, show me the
Way to lenity and peace

To unobscured waters
And a pure love to lease

Kat Stubing studied at UMBC and took sketch writing classes at Upright Citizens Brigade. Her poems are published (or soon to be) in Beyond Words, Allegory Ridge, Closed Eye Open, and Wingless Dreamer. Kat lives, works, and plays in New York City.
