Poetry by Ellen Goldsmith

1
I interrupt
my reading of Phillip Roth on Herzog
to look out on the rain-drenched landscape.

Mid-October, the time of leaves falling.

Yesterday, the light breeze gently ushered
leaves to the ground. Today, they leave
quickly, in abundance.

2
Herzog’s letters, conjectures, dissatisfactions, accusations
fly
unrestrained.

3
In a time of drought,
how comforting
the sound of heavy steady rain.

4
It isn’t until the last page
that Herzog enters
my heart.
