The God of Small Moments

Poetry by Lara Lehman

What is the point,
if not this?

To stand, leaning
on the unmade bed,
this quiet January morning.

You stopped
for a moment
to play with the cat.

…A bit idly, now.
You both feel a
second sleep coming on.
You see it in her eyes.
Time for rest,
Not time to fight
.

The air is cool.
The sun is white.

And there is no reason
not to celebrate this day
by taking your naps now.

Lara Lehman is an award-winning teacher and writer now in her West Coast era. Recent work on craft will appear in The Writer’s Chronicle and The Artisanal Writer. Pastor and Pasture

Poetry by David Ehrenman

The color of the harvest,
Sunset crowns the laborers
Rewarding earth for hours
Endured before night’s herald
Says “rest,” enforced by darkness.
Purpose unified will now
Disperse—the centralized sun
Cedes skylight to scattered stars.

David Ehrenman is an Australian-American poet currently working for a study center at the University of Minnesota. David earned Highest Distinction in English at the University of Virginia, and his poetry has appeared in Ekstasis Magazine, The Journal of Undiscovered Poets, and The Mythic Circle.

blue herons

Poetry by Rose Brightree

this river is scented by its mother
the sea
salt water running upstream
coming to meet it halfway

out of this reunion arise
two blue herons
wearing the sky
on loosened wings

legs floating in midair
like a dancer’s
orange-lily beaks lifted
to the rising sun
gamboge eyes that see the way
light does      touching what cannot be touched
any other way    the tips of mountains
flight of water that is a
cloud

and as they raise themselves
to the high winds that will
           carry them
as their bodies join the far-flung distance unfurling
                                                                          its wide blue wings
i know they continue to teach me
    how to live

Rose Brightree is a poet, artist, classical musician, and passionate nature lover and supporter.
